“Baby girl,” he said. “Men will always fall in love with you - trust me, I’ve been there and I’m still there. The forever bachelor in me would love to settle down with you but I know that Vince is the one for you. Sure, he lays it on thick and he can be dense on occasion but it’s so clear to everyone who’ve seen the both of you together that it’s meant to be. Try not giving him a hard time, my dear. He truly loves you and will do anything he can so he won’t lose you.”
“I don’t know, Brick,” I said as I was still hugging him. “With everything that’s happened between he and I over the last 20 odd years, I just don’t know what to do with him.”
“Take it day by day,” he said. “Nothing is stopping you from having fun but please be careful on your side adventures. The SRO did a number on you and I don’t like what he’s done to you nor to your spirit. Be the strong ass woman that you are and that you were born to be. Show him who’s boss!”
“Oh, Brick,” I sighed. “Right now, I just need to work on what’s been going on lately. As you know, Vince hurt me and I don’t trust him like I used to but he’s trying to make it up. The SRO used me to get out of his marriage and I used him for some fun. I’m just too damn old for this fucking shit.”
We hugged for another moment before letting go. He leaned down and kissed me; I was a bit surprised and my mouth opened a little bit - I, inadvertently, welcomed his kiss. He tasted like chocolate. And cigarettes. I pulled away and told him that cigarettes aren’t cool. He said that he knew and then let himself out to walk the 50 or so yards home. I sighed. Brick was a good friend despite tasting like cigarettes. Ew. I laughed and took a shower after using a copious amount of mouthwash.
After getting dressed in my warmest and fuzziest sweats, I headed downstairs. I smelled flowers but then again I had just used my allergy nasal spray - always thought it smelled like flowers but what I smelled was stronger…when I saw my living room, I knew who exactly Brick let in….Vince. I immediately texted Brick to see what happened. He admitted Vince into my place, stayed there and then he locked up. I growled then gently said that he should’ve asked for my permission to let him in. Brick apologized. I let it go and headed to the kitchen.
“Oh, Vince,” I whispered when I saw him pouring champagne for us. “Baby, don’t hurt me…. I can’t take it anymore.”
“Oh, my love,” Vince said huskily after kissing me. “I won’t hurt you ever again. I’ve missed you so much, darling.”
“Let’s head upstairs after we finish the champagne,” I said. “We have some catching up to do.”
“That we do,” he said. “But my friend of a friend is ready to set his restaurant up for the two of us again. That is if you want to.”
“When do we need to leave?” I asked begrudgingly; I really didn’t want to go. I was tired and wanted to stay at home.
“In an hour,” he said as he gently began to kiss my neck. “We can catch up for a little bit, love!”
I took his hand and we went upstairs. We stripped, got onto my bed and we were intimate for quite a while. Afterwards, I looked at the clock; we had 15 minutes to get ready. We showered and got dressed; he was in a navy suit and I was in a form fitting blue dress with matching stilettos and purse (I quickly threw my stuff in there).
As we were heading out the door to meet George, the SRO’s soon to be ex wife was at the door.
“Ummmmm, hi?” I said. “Are you ok? Is he ok?”
“I guess,” she said. “Please go to the hospital after you head home from wherever you’re coming from. He’s been shot.”
“Oh sweetie,” I sighed as I shook my head. “Was it an accident or did you do it on purpose?”
“What?!” she started. “What do you mean?”
“He told me that if he gets shot, there’s a good chance that you were involved,” I said. “I laughed it off but I gave the local police 24/7 access to my recording doorbell not long afterwards. They saw you run across it an hour ago, covered in blood and freaking out. I know you had something to do with it, so does he and so does my local department….the state police.”
She turned white. As she tried to run, the police caught her and arrested her. Her bandaged husband nodded his head to both Vince and I, he smiled a pained smile and he was assisted back into the ambulance that rolled up after the police arrived; he needed to go back to stay at the hospital and heal more before he was officially released.
As Vince was helping me into his car, the SRO texted me: “The all knowing Oz. Thank you for saving my life by getting me out of that marriage.”
I showed Vince the text and then we went to the restaurant for dinner. He asked how I knew and I said that I am Oz; I know and see all. He dropped it. We didn’t talk much during dinner; he wanted to talk more but seeing the man I had spread my legs for in the past few days put a damper on Vince’s mood. On the way back to my place, he asked if I wanted visit the SRO in the hospital. I said that I just wanted to check on his status with his nurses. Vince sighed heavily, rolled his eyes and said ok. I knew that he wasn’t happy with me being checking in on someone I used to be intimate with but he trusted me.
When I got to his room, he was asleep so I went to the nurse’s station. I identified myself as a friend of his and the nurses all smiled; they all knew who I was. I asked them to not give me a ton of details due to privacy laws but I wanted to know if he was ok and will continue to heal. They said yes and I left.
I headed back to Vince’s car and we headed back to my place for the rest of the night. I got undressed and hopped into bed, falling asleep immediately despite Vince being frustrated; he was frustrated that I care about the well-being of a colleague.
